{"id":604,"date":"2020-08-21T11:55:17","date_gmt":"2020-08-21T18:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vscrypt.com\/?p=604"},"modified":"2020-08-21T13:06:02","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T20:06:02","slug":"domain-trust-relationship-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vscrypt.com\/domain-trust-relationship-error\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Domain Trust Relationship Failed Error"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Issue or Error Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When logging into a domain-joined Windows computer, you get the following error message:<\/p>\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" aria-describedby=\"shcb-language-1\" data-shcb-language-name=\"plaintext\" data-shcb-language-slug=\"plaintext\"><span><code class=\"hljs language-plaintext\">The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.<\/code><\/span><small class=\"shcb-language\" id=\"shcb-language-1\"><span class=\"shcb-language__label\">Code language:<\/span> <span class=\"shcb-language__name\">plaintext<\/span> <span class=\"shcb-language__paren\">(<\/span><span class=\"shcb-language__slug\">plaintext<\/span><span class=\"shcb-language__paren\">)<\/span><\/small><\/pre>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways to resolve this issue, but here are two ways that have always worked for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\">Using PowerShell<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <code>Test-ComputerSecureChannel<\/code> cmdlet is available in PowerShell 5.1 or later.  To fix the trust relationship with the domain, use the <code>-Repair<\/code> switch which will disjoin and rejoin the domain.  You will also need to specify a domain administrator credential that can remove and join the domain (the <code>-Credential<\/code> switch takes care of that).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will repair the trust relationship without requiring multiple reboots.  All you have to do is login using a local administrator account and execute the following cmdlet from an elevated PowerShell window.<\/p><div id=\"vscry-1\" class=\"vscry-content\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-0201055796701118\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0201055796701118\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"1379369629\" \ndata-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\ndata-ad-format=\"fluid\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" aria-describedby=\"shcb-language-2\" data-shcb-language-name=\"PowerShell\" data-shcb-language-slug=\"powershell\"><span><code class=\"hljs language-powershell\"><span class=\"hljs-built_in\">Test-ComputerSecureChannel<\/span> <span class=\"hljs-literal\">-Repair<\/span> <span class=\"hljs-literal\">-Credential<\/span> (<span class=\"hljs-built_in\">Get-Credential<\/span>)<\/code><\/span><small class=\"shcb-language\" id=\"shcb-language-2\"><span class=\"shcb-language__label\">Code language:<\/span> <span class=\"shcb-language__name\">PowerShell<\/span> <span class=\"shcb-language__paren\">(<\/span><span class=\"shcb-language__slug\">powershell<\/span><span class=\"shcb-language__paren\">)<\/span><\/small><\/pre>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\">Manual Method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you prefer to do this manually, you will have to remove the computer from the domain, reboot, then rejoin it to the domain and reboot one more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use a local administrator account to log on to the computer.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Start<\/strong>, press and hold (or right-click)&nbsp;Computer&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;Properties.<\/li><li>Select&nbsp;Change settings&nbsp;next to the computer name.<\/li><li>On the&nbsp;Computer Name&nbsp;tab, select&nbsp;Change.<\/li><li>Under&nbsp;the&nbsp;Member of&nbsp;heading, select&nbsp;Workgroup, type a workgroup name and then select&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li><li>When you are prompted&nbsp;to restart the computer, select&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li><li>On the&nbsp;<strong>Computer Name<\/strong>&nbsp;tab, select&nbsp;<strong>Change<\/strong>&nbsp;again.<\/li><li>Under&nbsp;the&nbsp;<strong>Member of<\/strong>&nbsp;heading, select&nbsp;<strong>Domain<\/strong>, and then type the domain name. &nbsp;<\/li><li>Select&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>, and then type the credentials of the user who has permissions&nbsp;in the domain.<\/li><li>When you are prompted to restart the computer, select&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Restart the computer.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I would recommend the PowerShell method because it is quick, easy, and does not require multiple reboots of the machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Issue or Error Symptoms When logging into a domain-joined Windows computer, you get the following error message: Solution There are many ways to resolve this &hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":605,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[108,98],"tags":[109,111,112,110],"class_list":["post-604","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-issues","category-kb","tag-trust-relationship","tag-trust-relationship-error","tag-trust-relationship-failed","tag-windows-domain"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
